Why hybrid bearings? 

The balls CeramicSpeed use are fundamental to the properties of CeramicSpeed bearings. The balls are manufactured from Silicon Nitride of an extremely high quality. They are only produced in two places in the world, and production of each ball takes from 50 to 70 days. The balls have an extremely hard and smooth surface, and are better than steel balls in all ways.

Advantages

Extreme wear resistance

Silicon Nitride balls are 2.3 times harder than hardened steel

Reduced weight

Silicon Nitride is 58% lighter than steel, this reduces the load on the other components in the bearing, thereby increasing the maximum speed of the bearing by 30-50%

Reduced need for lubrication

CeramicSpeed balls are 4 times smoother than steel. The friction coefficient of CeramicSpeed balls against steel is 0.2, whereas the friction coefficient of steel against steel is 0.8.

No cracks or micro-welds 

When silicon nitride balls are sufficiently smooth they polish the races, instead of making cracks – which can be a problem with steel balls.

High resistance to foreign particles and corrosion

Ceramic balls don’t corrode, and crush any particles that enter the bearing. This means that if the races are damaged the ceramic balls polish them, whereas steel balls accelerate the deterioration process.

Low Friction

The ceramic balls are rounder, lighter and smoother, reducing friction and energy loss in comparison to steel balls. Optimising other components in the bearing reduces friction even further – without reducing the lifetime.

Increased stiffness and reduced vibration

The ceramic balls have an extremely low coefficient of expansion – only a quarter that of steel balls, and are both rounder and smoother; this means that the bearing is more precise, with less vibration. At the same time the ceramic balls polish the races, so they become smoother over time. 

Corrosion resistance

CeramicSpeed deep groove ball bearings are made with ceramic balls with an inner and outer ring in hardened steel. Deep groove ball bearings are the most commonly used bearing and can be used for many different purposes, with both low and high RPM.

Deep groove ball bearings with ceramic balls obtain axial as well as radial loads.

Bearings with longer lifetime

Ceramic speed hybrid bearings are far stronger and can easily support all types of loads. Thid means that they have a longer lifetime, lower friction and a lower level of energy consumption.

Thin Section Ball Bearings

CeramicSpeed thin section ball bearings are made with ceramic balls, which are 400 % smoother and 229 % harder than hardened steel. These bearings are particularly suitable for smaller constructions, where high precision or low noises are required.

Bearings of the highest quality

The ceramic balls and the rings of hardened steel give a wear-resistant and low friction bearing of the highest quality. The ceramic balls are made using Silicium Nitrid, which has the unique quality to reisist corrosion. Furthermore, the CeramicSpeed balls have an extremely hard surface, crushing the contaminating elements that might enter the bearing. The balls polish and thereby repair the small damages that occurs in the raceways. These properties are the reason why the CeramicSpeed bearing lifetime is 4-8 times longer than standard thin section ball bearings with steel balls.

Single row angular contact ball bearing consist of stiff, non-partible units. The bearings are suitable for high RPM and can support axial loads in one direction. Mounted as a pairs, the bearings can handle loads from both directions.

Inner and outer rings are hardened steel. The raceways are offset displaced in relation to the direction of the bearing axle. However, the bigger angular contact (typically 10 – 45 degrees) the more load in the axial direction and thereby less radial load.

Lighter ball bearings 

The ceramic balls of Silicium Nitride are 58% lighter than hardened steel, this reduces the load of the other bearing parts due less inertia.

Thanks to this, the maximum speed of the bearing is increased by 30 – 70 % compared to similar standard steel bearings.

A hybrid Self-Aligning Ball Bearing is recommended where the adjustments of axles and houses are difficult.

The outer ring in hardened steel has a concave raceway filled with CeramicSpeed balls. This type of bearing can accommodate both axial loads and radial loads.

High quality ball bearings

Ceramic balls from CeramicSpeed are made of Silicium Nitride and have a surface smoothness, which is 3 to 4 times better than steel balls. Therefore, the balls have a polishing effect in the raceways, and you avoiding seizures and micro-welds in the raceways, which occurs when using steel balls.

Double-row ball bearings are similar to Deep groove ball bearings but with two rows of balls – both rows are with ceramic balls. Because of the extra row, the Doble-row Ball Bearings have deeper races and are therefore able to handle higher loads compared to Deep groove ball bearings, which have one row of ceramic balls.

Double row ball bearings with and without seals

CeramicSpeed double-row ball bearings can handle loads in axial and radial directions. They are available with and without seals.

Ceramic balls do not corrode. The CeramicSpeed balls go even further, and crush any foreign particles that enter the bearing, polishing out any damage to the raceways.

Y/UC Ball Bearings For Mounted Ball Bearing Units

The category Y-bearings also called UC bearings and their bearing houses and seals, are available from CeramicSpeed in most types and sizes.

The solutions from CeramicSpeed makes a real difference thanks to our insert bearings, which are made with ceramic balls and have been testet improve the solutions by including seals in the bearing and house.

The ceramic balls in Silicium Nitride do not corrode, furthermore they crush every contaminating element that enter the bearing. The balls polish the small fractions that occur in the raceway, offering a significantly increased lifetime.

The insert bearings are available with eccentric locking collar and grub screws. The bearing with eccentric locking collar have a self-aligning feature due to their spherical outer diameters, which matches the ring.

The housing consist of either cast iron, cast stainless steel or composite.

The housing seals are also available in Teflon or Viton and can easily handle temperatures up to 280ºC.

Four Point Contact Ball Bearings

Four point contact bearings are bearings that consists of a single row of ceramic balls and a raceway designed to handle axial loads from both directions. At a certain axial load it can also handle limited radial loads.

Solid contact ball bearings

Four point contact ball bearings have a solid outer ring with a cage for the CeramicSpeed balls, and a separable inner ring. As the inner ring can be separated in two halves a larger amount of balls can be placed in the bearing. This means that the inner ring matches the outer ring, and therefore it cannot be replaced with an inner ring from another bearing.

Bearings for contaminated environments

LongLife Xtreme fast/slow bearings

Bearings for contaminated areas, where foreign particles can enter the bearing and affect its performance. The extreme hardness of the balls means that they simply crush any foreign particles which enter the bearing. Combined with the smoothness of the balls, and the optimal type of grease, this significantly reduces the pressure on the races, and the potential for damage. Xtreme bearings last at least 4-8 times longer than the standard bearings which they replace.

The LongLife Xtreme range also includes a “slow” version, which is suitable for slowly rotating bearings, and bearings which don’t rotate fully. Among other adjustments, the lubrication fill is increased from 30% to 80% on “slow” versions. 

LongLife WearCoat –Roller bearings

A series of roller bearings developed to increase the lifetime of bearings in contaminated environments, and bearings that are subject to high loads. The rolling elements in these bearings are coated with an extremely hard material, which makes them even more robust against foreign objects, high loads and wear. This also reduces wear on the races, thereby further increasing the lifetime of the bearing.

LongLife Sealing Systems

In some cases it can be advantageous to combine CeramicSpeed bearings with an optimised sealing system.

The improved seal reduces the direct load on the bearing, and thereby helps to increase lifetime and optimise performance.

Sealing systems are typically used in challenging environments, where the bearing is exposed to pollution from liquids and foreign particles, or the operating temperature is very high. 

LongLife Linear motion technologies

These products are often exposed to pollution from foreign particles, and optimal lubrication can either be difficult or undesirable. A hybrid bearing solution reduces the need for lubrication, and increases the bearing’s resilience to foreign objects. At the same time wear is reduced on the part which the bushing or guide runs on. This reduces maintenance frequency, leading to savings on rails, spindles and axels.

LongLife Insulate bearings – your guarantee against stray currents

The ceramic balls are nonconductive and have an insulating ability of at least 2.5kW; this is much higher in larger balls. In comparison, bearings from competing manufacturers with an insulating coating typically have an insulating ability of up to 1kW; provided that the coating is not damaged – for example when the bearing is mounted. In practice this protection isn’t always sufficient, meaning that these bearings are also vulnerable to damage by stray currents. 

CeramicSpeed LongLife Insulate bearings are your guarantee against this type of damage!

As the insulating effect comes from the properties of the CeramicSpeed balls themselves, rather than an applied coating, it’s much easier to work with the bearing, as you avoid the risk of damaging the coating when fitting the bearing. In addition to being protected from the passage of electrical currents, you’ll find that the operating temperature is 10-20°C lower, and the lifetime is 4-8 times longer than traditional steel bearings.

Advantages of CeramicSpeed bearings over coated bearings in electric motors-FAQ

Is it always a good idea to use insulated bearings in electric motors?

Yes! - Especially if the motor is frequency controlled

Leading motor manufacturers agree that stray currents can cause damage to bearings in frequency controlled motors. There are a variety of solutions to this problem, but the most common is the use of insulated bearings. Insulated bearings aren’t always used in smaller motors, however stray currents can cause damage in motors as small as 1-2 kW. 

Do both bearings need to be insulated?

Not necessarily – in some cases insulated bearings are only used in the non-drive side, where the smallest bearings are mounted. A single insulated bearing breaks the current, but doesn’t always prevent stray currents passing through the bearing. If you want to increase the reliability of the motor, then we recommend that CeramicSpeed bearings are used on both the drive side and non-drive side. This provides optimal durability and lifetime, and completely prevents electrical currents passing through the bearing.

If the drive side bearing is a roller bearing, then it can be difficult to obtain an insulated bearing, but in some cases the bearing can be replaced with a hybrid ball bearing.

Are there different types of insulated bearings?

Yes! – There are bearings with insulated coatings and bearings with ceramic balls.

The most common insulated bearings use steel balls, with a 200 micron insulating layer applied to either the inner or the outer ring. The coating has an insulating ability of up to 1kW – assuming it has not been damaged (for example in mounting). This type of bearings often experience electrical damage.

Bearing analysis – what can failed bearings tell us?

A lot! A failed bearing can be a valuable source of information, and the key to improvement.

Unfortunately failed bearings are often replaced with an equivalent bearing, without checking how the bearing could be improved. 

Energy saving

The efficiency of CeramicSpeed bearings can lead to significant savings in energy use.

We tested two bearings with friction free seals, running at 3,000 RPM: A standard 6318 bearing against an identical bearing with CeramicSpeed 6318-HC5 balls. The bearing fitted with CeramicSpeed balls used 43% less energy.

The higher the speed, the greater the potential for energy saving.

LongLife HighTemp bearings

The high thermal stability of the balls used in CeramicSpeed bearings means that we can offer a unique HighTemp bearing series, for use in operating environments where the temperature reaches up to 2600C or 3500C. Ceramic balls have a low coefficient of thermal expansion – only a quarter of that of steel balls, and don’t microweld to the races. These properties mean that CeramicSpeed HighTemp bearings can be used with a lower degree of play than other high temperature bearings, improving their function at a high RPM. Ceramic balls also create a lower degree of wear on the races, and used together with high quality lubricants from Klüber, provide you with a solution which has an extremely long lifetime in high temperature operating environments.

Long Life CorroCoat – Roller bearings

A series of roller bearings specially developed for use in humid environments. A chrome coating, which gives excellent protection against the build-up of rust, is applied to the rollers, and in some cases also the races. This makes the bearings ideally suited for use in humid or otherwise corrosive environments, where rust reduces the lifetime of regular bearings.
