Grooved Roller Bearings

Patented CMC Grooved Roller Bearings (GRBs) are the best performing precision thrust, radial and combo bearings on the market, providing a minimum of 5 times the life of comparably sized bearings

CMC Grooved Roller BearingThe Grooved Roller Difference

The CMC Grooved Roller Bearing (GRB) difference lies in the patented grooved roller and race designs.

  • The design increases the contact points in the same physical space, thereby increasing the life of the bearing.
  • Specifically designed to match the envelope dimensions of the most common angular contact bearing duplex and quad pack sets. In this way, the GRB can be an exact dimensional replacement for existing designs where significantly longer life is desired.
  • With new designs, the GRB delivers a unique opportunity for size and weight reduction. By providing a smaller yet more capable bearing, overall system size and weight are optimized, and next higher assembly costs are reduced. Also, in linear motion applications, by providing a smaller bearing the ball or roller screw shaft complexity is simplified, overall system weight is reduced, and next higher assembly costs optimized.

CMC Grooved Roller Bearing ExplodedGRB Components

There are five primary components of the patented GRB (see picture):

  1. Grooved Inner Race
  2. Grooved Outer Race (with or without flange)
  3. Grooved Rollers
  4. Spacers
  5. Retaining Rings

The outer race, inner race, and rollers carry load. The spacer retains and spaces the rollers.

Benefits of Grooved Roller Design

  • Significantly Increased Life: By virtue of the increase in dynamic load capacity, life increases by an order of magnitude. CMC bearing life is generally five to ten times longer than that of competitive bearings.
  • Larger Load Capacity: CMC bearings are capable of handling significantly higher loads than the competition in both thrust and radial directions.
  • Smaller and Lighter: CMC GRBs do the work of much bigger competitive bearing solutions, enabling optimized designs that reduce overall size and weight of the entire assembly. Standard sizes: Available in the common 200 and 300 series sizes up to 350mm OD. Larger sizes are available upon request.
  • Costs Reductions: The cost/performance ratio of the GRB is significantly better than any competitive bearing on the market. This of course reduces total bearing costs, but often more importantly dramatically reduces maintenance and replacement costs.

Preload (Zero Backlash) Bearings

The CMC GRB offers a unique capability in applications where a pre loaded bearing system is required.  The CMC GRB can be supplied in a “self-contained” pre loaded arrangement that eliminates the need for an external system of springs or clamp-up design features.

There are many cases where a negative operational clearance (preload) is required to enhance the stiffness of the bearing arrangement or to increase the running accuracy.  Some examples of systems that sometimes require no backlash or preload are:

  • Machine tool bearings
  • Pinion bearings in automotive axle drives
  • Bearing arrangements in electric motors
  • Bearing arrangements for oscillating movement

CMC's GRBs can be supplied with three levels of precision controlled preload.  The classes for bearing sets with preload are:

  • L – light preload (standard)
  • M – moderate preload
  • H – heavy preload

Planetary Roller Screws

CMC Planetary Roller Screw ExplodedCMC's High Performance Planetary Roller Screws (PRS) offer exceptional performance. Paired with CMC's ground-breaking Grooved Roller Bearing and a dedication to providing unparalleled customer service, CMC offers an unbeatable combination.

The PRS design is based on the industry standard planetary roller screw first patented in 1950 and used for high-force electric linear actuation ever since. CMC has incorporated some unique features, design improvements, alternate materials and heat treating processes, and proprietary manufacturing techniques to enable higher load capacities and/or longer life roller screws. Combined with the Grooved Roller Bearing, CMC provided an unparalleled ability to decrease size and weight in your linear motion application.

Replacing Alternate Technologies

CMC Planetary Roller Screws, especially when paired with CMC Grooved Roller Bearings, allow for many current hydraulic, pneumatic, and high precision ball screw applications to be converted to roller screw applications.

This conversion provides long term cost savings because of dramatically less maintenance costs, ease of maintenance, and a significant environmental benefit.

CMC Creative Motion Control

CMC Grooved Roller Bearing and Roller ScrewCreative Motion Control was founded in 2002 on the simple concept that a new, patented grooved roller bearing that can dramatically increase life and load, when combined with the technology of planetary roller screws and outstanding customer service, would create a true paradigm shift in the electromechanical linear actuator market. The patented CMC Grooved Roller Bearing is the result of a dedicated team of design and manufacturing engineers that set out to redefine the standards for performance, efficiency, availability and cost of bearings throughout the world. CMC continues to position itself as a catalyst for innovation by developing and delivering new game changing motion control technologies.

Innovative engineering is at the core of Creative Motion Control’s success. Our team of rocket scientists (literally) have designed and patented the future of the bearing industry. We have extensively tested the units to ensure adherence to our published specifications and capacities. All of this work has resulted in our ability to bring you unmatched performance: higher load capacity, longer life, and more efficient operation.

Our products have a positive net effect on the environment. By operating at a significantly higher efficiency rate than competitive technologies, CMC’s roller screws and bearings require considerably less power to operate. In combination with our cost and performance advantages, this makes replacing hydraulic and pneumatic actuators with electromechanical actuators a truly viable alternative, which not only reduces power consumption but eliminates the use of hazardous hydraulic fluids.

Everyone at Creative Motion Control is here to serve you – from engineering to manufacturing to sales to delivery to customer service. The team at CMC is here to deliver products that will make your project work smarter. As the value leader in the linear motion control industry, CMC challenges you to consider the possibilities
