Magnetic Technologies

In 1984, Magnetic Technologies was founded with the aim of supplying high quality, American-made, magnetic brakes to the wire and cable industry. Over the years, they have created a wide range of product-lines serving a variety of industries. They continue to keep these founding principles central to our business.

Today, their products include magnetic shaft couplings, permanent magnet hysteresis and eddy current devices, magnetic capping headsets, and advanced payoff solutions.

All of their products are designed and built in Oxford, Massachusetts. With a full in-house machine shop, assembly, engineering, and inspection departments, they are fully equipped for your project whether it is an off-the-shelf brake, or a fully automated 100-position payoff stand.

Magnetic Hysteresis Brakes and Clutches

Magnetic Hysteresis Brakes & Clutches

These magnetic brakes and magnetic clutches use permanent magnets to produce a drag torque and require no electricity for operation. By driving the body of our magnetic brake and using the shaft as an output, these permanent magnet hysteresis brakes can be used as adjustable inline torque limiting magnetic.

Drag torque is constant and independent of slip speed.

Torque on each unit can be adjusted to any value between bearing drag (~0) and the max torque indicated in the table below

Current Controlled Brakes & Clutches

These electromagnetic brakes and electromagnetic clutches utilize an electromagnet to generate drag torque. Drag torque is dependent on input current and independent of slip speed, a constant current power supply such as our MPP24 must be used

Magnetic Couplings

Magnetic Couplings

Magnetic couplings offer a non-contact transfer of torque. They are typically used in magnetic drive pumps and magnetic mixers for seal-less applications; keeping corrosive, toxic, or flammable liquids from escaping into the atmosphere.

By driving one magnetic hub, torque is transmitted magnetically to the other magnetic hub. This can be done through the air or through a non-magnetic containment barrier such as stainless steel or fiberglass, allowing complete isolation of the inner magnetic hub from the outer magnetic hub. There are no contacting parts in magnetic drive pumps which allows for torque transmission through both angular and parallel misalignment.

Bottle Capping Clutches

Magnetic Capping Headsets

Most bottle capping clutches today are magnetic, but of the synchronous design. The synchronous design uses two sets of opposed magnets to achieve the desired torque. The result is a noisy, harsh, ratcheting effect. These clutches tighten the cap much like an impact wrench tightens the lugs on an automobile tire. With today’s thinner materials, higher speeds, and need for more precise torque, synchronous clutches are quickly becoming obsolete in the workplace. In the hysteresis design, the magnets drive the torque through a special material called the hysteresis disc. The hysteresis disc generates a completely smooth, highly repeatable torque to the bottle cap. The result is better torque to the cap and longer life for the clutch.

Complete Payoff Stands

Complete Payoff Stands

Magnetic Technologies now offers custom built turn-key cable payoff stands and wire payoff stands. We will work with you to determine the right solution for your payoff application.

Offering both non-contact ultrasonic sensor control or ultra-precise closed-loop strain gauge control, we can design and build custom cable payoff stands and/or wire payoff stands to fit within your tension precision requirements and your budget.

These cable payoffs and wire payoffs offer extremely simple setup and operation. Simply plug it in, select your tension on the keypad, and you are ready to run with constant, repeatable tension day after day. Tension can be changed while running with the touch of a button.

Constant Tension Assemblies

Constant Tension Assemblies

The Need for Constant Tension Devices

As a spool of material pays off, its diameter gradually decreases. Using a constant torque brake (Magnetic, Friction, Air, or other), the web tension on the material will increase as the diameter decreases. For some applications this is not a concern, however for others this poses a major problem.

Example: If a spool begins at 18″ diameter with 1lb of tension and ends at 3″ core size, the tension will reach 6lb by the time the spool is nearing empty.

Over the years, Magnetic Technologies have developed several solutions to this problem.

FASTLOCK

Fastlock

FastLock quick release shaft locking collars are used throughout the wire and cable industry for spool retention. The FastLock easily slides onto the spool shaft in one direction and locks in place. This quik loking functionality ensures spool retention while maximizing productivity.

To remove, simply pull on the release collar and the FastLock slides off of the shaft.

All FastLocks are constructed from Stainless Steel . Steel versions are available upon request.

By driving the body of our brake and using the shaft as an output, these permanent magnet hysteresis brakes can be used as an adjustable inline torque limiting clutch. The brake will drive without slip until the torque set point is exceeded at which point the brake will slip smoothly, protecting operators and equipment from damage
